From School Assembly to Local Vocals: Overcoming the ‘I Can’t Sing’ Myth

Many people carry the words “I can’t sing” for years. Sometimes it starts at school - being told to mime in assembly, feeling embarrassed in music lessons, or believing that singing is only for the naturally talented.
But at Local Vocals, we know that confidence can grow at any age.
Many of our members first joined after years of thinking singing “wasn’t for them.” Some had been told they were out of tune. Others had not sung in public since childhood. A few arrived convinced they would be the quietest person in the room - only to discover that singing in a group feels supportive, joyful, and far less scary than they imagined.
That is the beauty of beginner singing groups. You do not need to arrive with experience, confidence, or a “perfect” voice. You simply need to be willing to join in and enjoy the process. As one member put it, “I spent years thinking I couldn’t sing. Now choir is the best part of my week.”
Local Vocals is proud to be one of the welcoming non-audition choirs where everyone has a place. There are no solos, no pressure to perform perfectly, and no judgement - just friendly faces, uplifting songs, and the chance to find your voice again.
If you have ever been told you cannot sing, we would love to prove otherwise!
