A Lancaster choir where you can feel welcome from day one

Joining a choir can feel like a big step, especially if you’re worried about walking into a room full of people you don’t know, not being “good enough”, or feeling nervous about singing in front of others. That’s exactly why Local Vocals Lancaster is different.

Our choir is relaxed, supportive and full of people who remember what it felt like to come along for the first time. You’ll be welcomed in, shown where to go, offered a brew, and gently guided through the session by our friendly choir leader.

You don’t need to have sung in a choir before. You don’t need to read sheet music. You don’t need to know what part you sing. You simply need to enjoy music and be open to giving it a go.By the end of your first session, you’ll have sung uplifting songs, met friendly local people, enjoyed a brew and left feeling lighter, brighter and glad you came.

If you’ve been thinking “I’d love to sing, but…”

You’re not alone. Lots of our members felt nervous before their first Local Vocals session.

Maybe you’ve thought:

  • “I’m not sure I’m good enough to join a choir.”

  • “I haven’t sung since school.”

  • “I don’t know anyone there.”

  • “I can’t read music.”

  • “I’m worried everyone else will be better than me.”

  • “I’d love to meet people, but I feel nervous walking in on my own.”

  • “I’m busy during the day, but I’d love something uplifting in the evening.”

At Local Vocals Lancaster, none of that matters.

We sing together as a group, learn by ear, and create a safe, encouraging space where you can build confidence at your own pace. Nobody is put on the spot. Nobody is judged. And nobody has to be perfect.

This is about enjoying music, doing something for yourself and being part of a friendly local community.

Meet your Lancaster choir leader, John Wright

Your Lancaster choir is led by John Wright, a friendly and experienced choir leader, performer, composer and music educator based in the North West.

John has spent many years helping people of all abilities enjoy music, build confidence and discover the joy of singing with others. Originally from the Midlands, he studied music in Dorset before becoming a professional singer and musician, performing both as a solo artist and as part of a function band.

At Local Vocals, John leads choirs across Lancaster, Morecambe, Fleetwood, St Annes and Poulton-le-Fylde. His sessions are warm, welcoming and encouraging, with a real focus on helping people feel relaxed, included and confident — especially if they’re coming to choir for the very first time.

John will guide you through each song step by step, help you settle in, and make sure your first session feels relaxed, friendly and fun.

What happens at a Local Vocals Lancaster session?

Every Monday evening, we come together for 90 minutes of singing, laughter and connection.

A typical session includes:

  • A warm welcome when you arrive

  • Time to settle in & catch up with choir friends

  • Physical and vocal warm-ups to get everyone comfortable

  • Learning feel-good songs in three and four part harmony

  • Singing as a group, with no pressure to perform alone

  • Plenty of encouragement, laughter and support

  • A chance to meet new people and feel part of something local

Our arrangements are created especially for Local Vocals, so you’ll get to sing songs that feel exciting, uplifting and full of energy, without needing to read music.

After the rehearsal, you can log into the Local Vocals Members’ Area to access lyrics, harmony tracks and extra resources, so you can practise at home if you want to, and sign up to sing at local and regional events.

“If you love to sing, in the shower or along with the radio, you should seriously consider joining Local Vocals! By joining our choir, you can connect with others who enjoy singing, become part of a wonderful community and have lots of fun along the way!

Anyone can join, no matter what your level of skill or experience. Our weekly sessions have been a constant mood-lifter throughout the challenging times of the past few years. As well as being a really enjoyable hobby (and a very affordable one) singing is proven to have benefits for your physical and mental health. So what’s not to like?”
